Best Location to Stay in Duluth? Hampton Inn Canal Park Review
If you're planning a trip to Duluth, Minnesota, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is where to stay. ๐
Canal Park is one of the most popular areas in Duluth, but it's also one of the most expensive.
During our Fourth of July weekend visit, we stayed at Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park and paid more than $500 for just one night.
That's a lot for a Hampton Inn.
So what are you really paying for?
Is the hotel itself worth the premium price, or is it all about the location?
We spent a night here to find out. In this review, we'll show you the room, parking, breakfast, pool, fitness center, lake views, and the surrounding Canal Park area.
Most importantly, we'll explain why we think the location may be the biggest reason to stay here.
๐ Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park Location
Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park is located right in the heart of Canal Park, one of Duluth's most popular waterfront destinations.
From the hotel, you can easily walk to:
โ
Lake Superior
โ
The Duluth Lakewalk
โ
Restaurants
โ
Local shops
โ
The Aerial Lift Bridge
โ
Other Canal Park attractions
This location is particularly convenient if you prefer to park your car once and explore on foot.
And that's exactly what we did during our stay.
๐ Free Parking at Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park
One thing we really appreciated was the complimentary parking.
Parking can be limited and expensive around Canal Park during the busy summer season, so having a hotel parking lot right next to the property is a valuable convenience.
Hilton Honors Diamond members also have access to a few reserved parking spaces near the front entrance.
For us, it was easy to unload our luggage, park the car, and start exploring.
And once we parked, we didn't really need the car again.
๐๏ธ Our Hampton Inn Duluth Room
We stayed in a 2 Queen Partial View Non-Smoking Guest Room.
The room can accommodate up to five guests and had a partial view of Lake Superior and the Aerial Lift Bridge.
The room was clean and comfortable, but it was also fairly basic.
In other words, this is a nice Hampton Inn room, but there's nothing particularly luxurious about it.
Our room included:
โ
Two queen beds
โ
Refrigerator
โ
Microwave
โ
Coffee station
โ
Large-screen TV
โ
Updated bathroom
โ
Bathtub
โ
Basic bathroom amenities
The bathroom appeared to have been recently renovated and was clean and well maintained.
๐ What About a Lake View?
We're Hilton Honors Diamond members, but the hotel was fully booked during our stay, so there wasn't an upgrade available.
Our room had a partial lake view, including a view of the Aerial Lift Bridge.
If having a full Lake Superior view is important to you, don't assume you'll receive an upgrade.
๐ If the view matters to you, book the room category you actually want rather than relying on a potential upgrade.
โ Lobby & Breakfast Area
The hotel lobby is relatively small, but it's bright and welcoming.
There's a complimentary coffee station and several seating areas where guests can relax or get some work done.
The lobby also connects directly to the breakfast area.
And this is where the hotel starts to stand out.
Large windows at the back of the breakfast area look directly toward Lake Superior.
โ Grab some coffee,
๐ฅ Have breakfast,
๐ and enjoy the view.
That's a pretty nice way to start a morning in Duluth.
๐ฅ Free Breakfast at Hampton Inn
Like most Hampton Inn hotels, breakfast is included with your stay.
During our visit, breakfast was served daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
One of the most popular features is the make-your-own waffle station.
๐ง Pour the batter
โฌ๏ธ
๐ง Close the waffle maker
๐
๐ง Flip it over
โฑ๏ธ
๐ง Wait a couple of minutes
๐ด
๐ง Enjoy!
It's especially fun if you're traveling with children.
The breakfast selection during our stay included:
โ
Scrambled eggs
โ
Mini omelets
โ
Breakfast potatoes
โ
Breakfast meats
โ
Bagels
โ
Muffins
โ
Toast
โ
Yogurt
โ
Cereal
โ
Fresh fruit
โ
Juice
โ
Coffee
It's not a luxury hotel breakfast, but it's a solid complimentary breakfast and a convenient way to start your day without paying for another restaurant meal.
๐ The Best Part of the Hotel: Lake Superior Views
This is where we really started to understand the appeal of Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park.
Step outside the back of the hotel and you'll find a patio overlooking Lake Superior and the Lakewalk.
๐ Lake Superior is right in front of you.
๐ถ The Lakewalk is right there.
๐ธ And there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery.
The hotel doesn't have an onsite restaurant, but you can have breakfast in the morning or grab food nearby and bring it back to the patio.
For us, this was one of the nicest parts of the property.
๐ Indoor Pool & Hot Tub
The hotel also has an indoor heated swimming pool.
The pool was clean and well maintained, with plenty of seating and large windows that let in natural light.
The pool is about 4 feet 9 inches deep.
There's also a hot tub right next to the pool.
For families traveling with children, an indoor pool can be a nice bonus after a day of exploring Duluth.
๐๏ธ Fitness Center
Right next to the pool area is the hotel's fitness center.
It's compact, but it has the essentials:
โ
Treadmill
โ
Elliptical
โ
Stationary bike
โ
Free weights
The room was clean, bright, and had plenty of natural light.
It may not be a full-size fitness facility, but for a hotel stay, it has what most travelers need for a quick workout.
๐งบ Other Hotel Amenities
The hotel also offers several practical conveniences.
You'll find:
โ
Ice and vending areas on each floor
โ
Guest laundry facilities
โ
Indoor pool
โ
Hot tub
โ
Fitness center
โ
Complimentary breakfast
โ
Complimentary parking
These aren't necessarily the reasons you'd choose this hotel, but they can make a stay much easier, especially for families or longer visits.
โฐ Check-In & Late Checkout
Our check-in was quick and easy.
Standard checkout is at 11:00 a.m.
Late checkout may be available depending on availability.
As Hilton Honors Diamond members, we were able to extend our checkout until noon.
๐ If you have Hilton Honors elite status, it's worth asking about late checkout during your stay.
๐ Why We Loved the Canal Park Location
This is probably the most important part of our review.
We visited Duluth over the Fourth of July weekend, when the area was particularly busy.
We came to see the fireworks at Bayfront Festival Park.
Instead of worrying about traffic, road closures, parking, and getting back to the hotel late at night, we simply walked.
That's a huge advantage.
We parked our car at the hotel and explored Duluth on foot.
Restaurants were nearby.
Shops were nearby.
The Lakewalk was nearby.
Lake Superior was right outside.
And after the fireworks, we could simply walk back to the hotel.
๐ No driving.
๐ ฟ๏ธ No searching for parking.
๐ฆ No worrying about traffic.
๐ถ Just walk back to the hotel.
For us, that made the entire experience much more relaxing.
๐ฐ Is Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park Worth $500+ a Night?
This is where things get interesting.
If you're judging the hotel only by the room, our answer would probably be no.
It's a clean and comfortable Hampton Inn, but it's still a fairly standard mid-scale hotel room.
You're not getting a luxury hotel experience.
But you're also not paying only for the room.
You're paying for the location.
During busy weekends, especially holidays and special events, that location can be extremely valuable.
Instead of staying farther away and driving into Canal Park every day, you can park your car once and walk.
For us, that convenience made the higher price worthwhile.
๐ Is Canal Park the Best Place to Stay in Duluth?
It depends on what you're looking for.
If your main goal is finding the cheapest hotel room possible, you can certainly look outside Canal Park.
But if you want to:
โ
Park once
โ
Walk to restaurants
โ
Walk to shops
โ
Enjoy Lake Superior
โ
Access the Lakewalk easily
โ
Be close to the Aerial Lift Bridge
โ
Avoid driving and parking during busy events
then Canal Park is extremely convenient.
It's especially appealing for families with young children, older travelers, or anyone who prefers a more relaxed vacation.
๐จ Our Final Take
Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park is a comfortable, well-maintained mid-scale hotel, but its biggest advantage isn't the room. It's the location.
If you're looking for a luxury hotel, this probably isn't it.
But if you want to stay in the heart of Canal Park and explore much of Duluth without constantly getting back into your car, it's a very convenient option.
During our Fourth of July stay, that convenience was worth paying more.
A hotel farther away might have saved us money on the room, but we would have spent more time driving, looking for parking, and dealing with traffic.
Instead, we parked the car, walked around, enjoyed the fireworks, and relaxed.
For us, that's what made Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park worth considering.
